Background of the Study

Unemployment is a significant socio-economic issue in many countries, including Nigeria. Research has shown that unemployment can have a detrimental effect on mental health, leading to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress. This study seeks to assess the relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders, specifically focusing on patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Statement of the Problem

The relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders has been recognized globally, but there is limited empirical data on this issue in Nigeria, particularly in Ogun State. This study will explore how unemployment influences mental health among individuals at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders in patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.
  2. To assess the prevalence of mental health disorders in unemployed individuals seeking psychiatric care.
  3. To explore the social and psychological impact of unemployment on mental health.

  1. What is the relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders in patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta?
  2. What mental health disorders are most prevalent among unemployed individuals seeking psychiatric care?
  3. How does unemployment affect the social and psychological well-being of individuals with mental health disorders?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between unemployment and mental health disorders among patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.
  2. Unemployed individuals do not experience higher levels of mental health disorders compared to employed individuals.
  3. The social and psychological impact of unemployment does not significantly affect mental health disorders.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, who are unemployed. Limitations include the potential for self-reporting bias and a focus on only one geographic region, which may limit generalizability.
